Inspection, traceability and certification

The heat number is set once, at melting, and is never re-issued downstream. What the certificate says is what was measured on that heat.

StageWhat happens
1. MeltChemistry verified, heat number issued
2. FormForging, rolling or drawing — number carried on the tag
3. Heat treatSolution anneal and age, recorded per run
4. TestVolume, surface, mechanical and chemical, per the order
5. MarkNumber on the part where the drawing allows, on the tag always
6. CertifyOne certificate, one heat number, measured values

When a lot misses the specification

Declared before delivery, or not shipped.

A part outside the tolerance is either reworked and re-inspected, or the deviation is put in front of the buyer before it leaves. Shipping it and hoping the inspection does not happen is the one option that is not available.
