Grades and composition
Two Monel grades with very different behaviour: one is chosen for corrosion, the other for strength in the same corrosion.
| Grade | UNS | Family | Condition | Chosen for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monel 400 | UNS N04400 | NiCu 67/30 | Annealed | Corrosion resistance; marine, chemical, sour service |
| Monel K-500 | UNS N05500 | NiCu + Al, Ti | Age hardened | Same corrosion, roughly double the strength |
The difference that decides the order
K-500 is 400 with aluminium and titanium added so it can be age hardened. The corrosion resistance is essentially the same; the strength is roughly double. Where the part is a pump shaft or a valve stem carrying load in seawater, that is the reason to pay for K-500 — not a difference in corrosion.
