Quoting spring wire
What the coiler needs, rather than what a catalogue lists.
Spring wire is ordered for a machine, not for a shelf. The four things that cause a rejected coil are the wrong temper, the wrong cast, a coil the pay-off cannot unwind, and a tensile that was never stated. All four are settled before the order.
| Grade | 718, X-750, 625, A-286, K-500, MP35N or 3J21 — and whether you age after coiling |
| Wire size | Nominal diameter, plus the tolerance if the spring rate depends on it |
| Temper | Annealed for coil-then-age, or spring temper |
| Coil weight | What the coiler can mount, in kilograms |
| Pay-off | Direction and method, so the cast suits your machine |
| Tensile | The value the spring design assumes, where it is critical |
What a rejected coil usually means
- Wrong temper — spring temper supplied where the route needed annealed wire, or the reverse.
- Wrong cast — the wire spirals against the pay-off and will not feed straight.
- Coil too heavy — the package will not mount, and the wire is rewound before use.
- Tensile not stated — the spring measures weak against a design that assumed more.
What we confirm before shipping
| Temper | Checked against the ageing route you named |
| Cast and helix | Set to the pay-off you described |
| Tensile | Measured per lot and printed on the certificate |
| Coil weight | To the figure you gave, not to our standard |
